Introduction 

The ‘Scheduled Tribe’ identity is given to a tribal community or a group of tribal communities, irrespective of religion. 

Art. 342 of the Constitution refers to the President’s notification specifying the various tribal communities in different states/UTs in India. Art. 342 states that the President may by a public notification notify a community to be a Scheduled Tribe (ST) in a State or Union Territory.
